Hello All, I AM NEW TO THIS BOARD. I WANTED TO GET SOME GUIDANCE FROM ANYONE HERE. I AM 33 YRS OLD, ABOUT 5'5 AND I WEIGHT 170 LBS. I AM VERY DEPRESSED ABOUT MY WEIGHT. I GAINED ALL THIS WEIGHT WHEN I HAD MY 2ND CHILD. NOW I CANT SEEM TO TAKE IT OFF. I TRY TO WALK AND TO TAKE PILLS AND i JUST GET NO RESULTS. WELL I GUESS I DONT SEE IT. I AM ALWAYS DEPRESSED AND I THINK THAT DOES NOT ALLOW ME TO SEE THAT I HAVE LOST A LITTLE WEIGHT. I WAS 190LBS. MY ULTIMATE GOAL IS NOT TO BE IN COMPETITION OR ANYTHING (EVEN THOUGH IT WOULD BE NICE) BUT I JUST WANT TO LOOSE THE WEIGHT AND GET TONED AND MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. i WANT MY CHILDREN TO FOLLOW IN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. I HAVE SIBLINGS THAT ARE VERY OVERWEIGHT AND I AM THE SMALLEST IN THE GROUP AND AS YOU CAN SEE I AM 170. SO I REALLY DO NOT WANT TO GET BIGGER. I AM DEPRESSED AT THIS WEIGHT AND I HAVE TAKEN SO MANY PILLS SO THAT I CAN LOOSE WEIGHT AND I AM JUST NOT GETTING THERE. PLEASE HELP ME WITH ANY GUIDANCE AS TO WHERE I BEGIN. MY HUSBAND IS IN THE MILITARY HE IS AWAY RIGHT NOW. I AM A SINGLE MOM REALLY WITH 2 CHILDREN. I CANT AFFORD TO PAY FOR A GYM OR A TRAINER SO I WOULD LIKE TO FIND WAYS THAT I CAN WORK AT THIS ALONE. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!!THANK YOU

The Fat Flush Plan by Ann Louise Gittleman Ph.D C.N.S. is an excellent book for better health as well as weight loss. In her book Ann Louise speaks about many of the hidden weight gain factors as well as gives documentation and research to back up her philosophies. She also gives natural alternatives to help combat depression.

Just have patience and discipline... ;D I wish it were that simple. Honestly, I could have written the original post myself- I'm 32, 5'5 and just under 170lbs having given birth to my 2nd child in early April. I would love to train to compete in a fitness contest, but at this point a more realistic goal is to lose a lot of weight and get healthy. I've seen a few fitness contests on TV and I'm always inspired by the energy and skill that is shown- I doubt that I could ever match the level I've seen on TV, but it does look like fun. Here's a question that the OP didn't ponder...is 32 and overweight/terribly out of shape an unrealistic point to be thinking about entering a fitness contest in the future. I figure, even with major lifestyle changes and dedication that it would take at least 2 years before I would be anywhere near ready to compete...so, at that point I would be 34 to 35...eeeeek

The oldest competitor to compete had a life changing event that motivated her to pull her life back together, get in shape and compete. She competed for 3 years at ages 62, 63 & 65 (the way her birthday fell made the 3 consecutive years look like 4)
It is not rare to see 50s in the events. 40s are common.
It is never too late to pursue your dreams!!!

I didn't get started competing until I was 38 with no prior experience. It starts with desire. What I've found is there is no magic pill. Healthy Weight loss comes with three phases good nutrition, exercise and resistance training. Accept where your at without beating yourself up to much so you can move forward. Self acceptance is key whether you are 130 or 190 lbs. I started my life of fitness on an air force base in Minot North Dakota. When I had my first child I decided I needed to get back to pre-pregnancy weight so I joined a group exercise class they had on base for spouses and I've been hooked ever since. The class was very inexpensive and it was nice to get out of the house and meet with other moms who had very similar needs. I do believe exercising in a group helps to keep you motivated as well as consistent. Maybe you can start your own group. Here are just a few tips to get you started 1. Do something that makes you sweat everyday 2. Get rid of junk food in the house. (Your kids don't really need it either.) 3.Write in a journal everyday 4. Use the gym on base 5. Set new goals ( not just about weight loss) 6. Do your best everyday 7. Don't beat yourself up if you have a bad eating day just get right back on track realizing we are all human. 8. Limit eating out 9. If you eat out try to make healthier choices 10. Don't eat when your on the phone or watching TV 11. Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily 12. To Crystal Clear- You could probably be ready to do a show in 1 year if you dedicate yourself; definitely 2 years. Your age in NOT a factor-you are still young. I competed in 2000 and 2001 Ms. Fitness USA Nationals, in my 30s (placed top 15) and I am 38 now. I gained 60 lbs. with my pregnancy 4 years ago, and developed a disease that had me off my feet (pretty much bed-ridden) for 1 year. In June of this year-I stepped back on stage after lots of hard work. You can do whatever you set your mind to...and having a show to work towards (pick a date!) is the best motivator. Hi Janet When I get down, I always listen to music (instead of TV-which I hardly ever watch unless there is music playing). Spend as much time out doors as possible. If you have a low tolerance to the sun, it means you have a water imbalance-and are probably retaining water. Problem easily resolved. Do you like to rollerblade? Put your kids in a stroller and push them on your rollerblades. Have your mp3 with upbeat music. I would say pretty much stay away from tv if you are feeling so bad. Shows like the variety shows-popular in the seventies, MTV with music videos, Yahoo Lanch music.com, music.yahoo.com/ the ballet nutcrackers are good shows to watch. But TV shows that play all the time is full of cops, detectives court-which all has trouble in it. Even comedy shows that shows families together may make you miss your husband more-or is more of a reminder. Subliminal video tapes are great. For instance-a non smoking tape even when you do not smoke helps you avoid the habit of repeated negative feelings. All these tapes have positve messages. The truth is- most people-esp adults-do not see the importance of being dedicated to exercising. You are going to have to devleop a stubborn mind set when it comes to fitness. If you get insults-not the compliments you were expecting-it means you are losing weight. Ihave long learned to take insults and attacks as compliments and be very cautious about compliments. Most people are going to try to hinder you. It is there weakness not yours. take your kids to the beach and park. you have to workout strenously-not necessairly with weights-but if you walk-it has to be challenging to see weight loss results. I used to get so discouraged when every fitness magazine I bought seemed to discourage exercising and wanted everyone to see it as a sex magazine. The magazines is getting better at this. watch Chris Rock staged shows! I remember this lady who had a husband in the military years ago. She was so depressed. She had six kids. They were all healthy, good natured happy disposition. She said she felt like a divorced woman going to pick up her child support check, but she could not date like a divorced woman. I cannot say I know how she felt-I do not see why she was so depressed-but your story reminded me of her.
