I would like to know where I should start first to prepare for a Ms. Fitness contest. I'm on a budget and don't have enough money to have a personal trainer, choreographer, and gymnastics couch. Please tell me which class should I take first...............I can't seem to find a choreographer in my area so what dance class should I take that will help me with a dance routine for the competition.....................or should I take a gymnastics class first? What to do? Confused? I really don't dance and I'm really not flexible either so I do need help in both areas!!

Hi yhout! I am happy for you that you have decided to participate in Ms. Fitness shows. I have been doing shows for 3 years and have been loving it! A fitness routine should display strength, flexibility, endurance, and entrtainment. I would start with dance training because this will aid you in your presentation. I take jazz. Gymnastics is a wonderful idea too. It ia a good idea to buy the prejudging tape from Ms. Fitness USA to get specific ideas for moves. The following are some good skills: one arm push up, splits, straddle jump, press holds in different positions, leaps, and backhandsprings. Of course it takes a lot of time to learn these skills. Just work hard, be patient, and enjoy each accomplishment as it comes. Good luck! I hope I helped you a little bit. morenita

I'm just starting out too, and spent some time at Barnes and Nobles, and Borders. They have nothing on the sport. Where would one purchase that tape? I'm also very lost as to wear to start with attire. What are the rules for the evening gown, swimsuit, high heels, and fitness outfit?

I really think you would be happy if you went to the competition camp Triple-A Aerobics Association is hosting in Cincinnati in February. There you could learn everything you need to know for very little expense to you. go to triple-a.net for more details. All of the rules pertaining to competition are posted on Ms Fitness under contest info. If you want to see what other girls are wearing my advice to you would be to purchase a current competition tape. Also it would be a great idea for you to order a subscription to Ms. Fitness Magazine for all kinds of info; from everything to diet and training tips to competition preparation.

Linda, Thank you for the help. I will check out that website and buy that book and a 2005 video. That should help me get started. Do you know if you have to wear tennis shoes during the routine or can you wear dance/gymnastics shoes?

Its up to you what shoes you wear. I would be prepared for any surface, however you never know what type of surface your going to compete on at a regional show.
