I would like to help defray some of my costs for competing by getting sponsors. What would you recommend to put in a portfolio and how to go about getting sponsors? Letters or in person or both? Do you suggest asking anyone or only those who are into the fitness arena? What do you suggest for compensation for their sponsorship? I was thinking that I could post something in the place of business with all the sponsors names and a picture of me, at least as a place to start. I am new so any guidance is welcome! Thanks!
I recommended a letter with the photo as a way of introducing yourself and getting your foot in the door so to speak. It will depend on what company/sponsor you go to, on what you have to offer them. I had a sweatsuit made and placed the sponsors logo/name on it and wore it to all of my competitions, I also took photos in it. One sponsor used me as a spokesperson and some photos from the competition in their infomercial. I also have made a few appearances for at various functions for sponsors. Another suggestion is you could possibly give a free talk on health/nutrition/training for the sponsorship company. Right now I am doing an awesome diet created by my sponsor and I have written a testimonial with before and after photos. Be creative, the possibility's are endless. Really, just ask for what you want and you just might get it.
You really would be suprised at how easy it is to get a sponsor. The main thing is you have to ask. Think about what you want from them and what you could give them in return. I have generally asked people in person, but a formal letter stating who you are, what you want and why they should sponsor you should suffice. Of course a dynamite picture of you wouldn't hurt. Just start talking to people about it and you will be suprised at how many people genuinely want to help you out. The sponsor doesn't even have to be fitness related.
