Anybody with a remote control and basic cable has, undoubtedly, at least, flipped through and seen a fitness competition pageant on ESPN, ESPN 2 or Fox Sports Northwest. Those who paid close enough attention may have seen a high-placing contestant from Klamath Falls a couple of weeks ago on FSN, and she has an interesting story.
Caring for a husband and three children while holding down a job is a typical busy schedule for a wife and mother, but there is nothing typical about Nikki Crawford. Crawford recently placed fourth in the United States in the ”Cortislim Miss Fitness U.S.A.“ competition in Las Vegas, Nev., Sept. 9, and was 10th in the world Sept. 10. To become eligible for the competition, athletes are required to win a qualifying show, which Crawford achieved by winning the Reno ”Miss Fitness Competition.“ The national competition in Las Vegas consisted of a series of judged events, beginning Sept. 7.
”The first day we introduced ourselves before competing in the evening gown event, where we wear one, and give a speech,“ Crawford said.
”They also picked a few of us to do the commercial breaks, and I did a few of those.“
The next day's activity was a judging of physiques in the swimsuit round.
”I also did an interview that day with Jenny McCarthy from E! Entertainment and got to teach her how to do a one-arm pushup, which was kind of fun,“ Crawford said. The following day was the finals, which included a talent routine in the morning, and a show and speech in the evening. ”The speech is your personal fitness journey, and mine emphasized how child obesity is at an all-time high,“ Crawford said. ”My speech is always about kids, since I'm a mother of three.
”I want to win a title so that I can make people aware of child obesity, and what a problem it is.“ In the aftermath of those events, final awards were handed out for the top contestants.
With Crawford's fourth-place showing, she qualified for the world competition along with the other top seven finishers, and then went on to place 10th in the world. Those are both incredible results period, let alone factoring in that this is somebody who has only been competing for five years.
”I did it as a challenge to get in shape,“ Crawford said. ”Originally, when my kids were little, I woke up at 4:30 a.m. and worked out at 5:30 a.m. because I didn't want to interrupt their schedule, and so I would be able to stay home with them.“
Nikki is married to Klamath Union boys basketball coach and junior varsity soccer coach Bret Crawford and, not surprisingly, their children Austin, 11, Mason, 8, and Tatijana, 6, are all involved with sports. ”Keeping up with them is how I get my cardio workout,“ Crawford joked. ”As a family, we go hiking, running and play soccer games.“ Professionally, Crawford works as a fitness director at the National Fitness and Racquet Club. ”I fit my workouts in between a teaching spin and aerobic classes,“ Crawford said. Crawford has also donated much time and effort in the community educating mothers and teenagers about healthy nutrition and exercise habits. She designed a web site, with a section for both demographics, for those interested at
www.nikkicrawford.com.
In addition, she developed a club in the summer so that children can get involved with working out instead of sitting around in day care. Crawford has been involved with the ”Miss Klamath Falls“ and ”Miss City of Sunshine“ pageants. ”I talk to contestants about good nutrition and about how important exercise is and also developing a routine,“ she said. ”I also did the same talk with girls involved with the ‘Outstanding Teen Pageant.'“
As a result of her fitness competition success, Crawford has been featured ”five or six“ times in Oxygen Magazine, under topics including nutritional recipes, an advice column and once acted as a contributing editor. She has also contributed work for Miss Fitness Magazine and Iron Man Magazine.
Crawford is also working on a series of projects and events for the future.
”I have a possible DVD exercise series in the works, I've been invited to compete in the Fitness Universe competition in November and, in May, I'll be doing a guest appearance at the Oregon Iron Man competition in Portland,“ she said.
